The Walter Payton Girls Golf team claimed the title of City Champions for another consecutive year, continuing the dynasty of the team who has won seven of the past eight years. The win was a great way to end the season, beating out Whitney Young-the closest competition during the season.
During the season, the girls played in meets against Lindblom, Northside, Taft, Whitney, Niles West, and St. Ignatius. Their matches started the first week of September, ending in mid-October. With such a short season, it was difficult to get a lot of practice in so all the team members put in extra hours individually over the summer to improve their games. Their hard work paid off as they finished their season undefeated.
The girls won city by a 33 stroke difference, coming close to the record lead of 45 strokes back in 2008. Izabel Cedeño ‘16 was the medalist of the meet shooting a score of 41 on a course with par of 35. Brooke Gardner ‘15 came in close second with a score of 44.
The team advanced to Regionals, which was played at Pheasant Run Golf course in St. Charles, Illinois. They had tight competition and did not advance as a team, but Brooke Gardner, Izabel Cedeño, and Chloe Wilson advanced as individuals to Sectionals. Sectionals provided even tougher competition, with the medalist of the competition shooting a 74-three strokes over par. Brooke came incredibly close to advancing shooting an 89, but was bumped out of the tenth slot by a score of 88.
It was a very successful season with the girls putting up a good fight against increasingly difficult competition. Though there are four seniors leaving the varsity team, there is a strong showing in the two remaining juniors and in junior varsity players Hollis Baker ‘17, Claire Seymour ‘16, Kate Byrne-Slepicka ‘16, and Aly Fritzmann ‘16.
