The Payton Girls Volleyball team went downstate for the third time in school history on November 15. Led by senior captains Morgan Barnes and Lena Mickelson, the team won their Regional, beat Northside in their Sectional semifinal, and won against Latin in the Sectional final. They faced Marian Central in the Supersectional matchup and won in two games to secure their spot as one of Illinois’ final four girl’s volleyball teams.
“We lost to Whitney in the city semi-finals, so we were even more determined to do well in the state series,” said Grace Hildebrand ‘15.
Their hard work paid off as they remain the only CPS girl’s volleyball team to make an appearance down state.
The team played their first game on November 15 in hopes of getting a spot in the championship game. They played LaSalle-Peru, a team from LaSalle, Illinois with an impressive record of 35-3. Payton played hard but lost in two games. In an article about the game, the Chicago Tribune named Alyssa Estrada ‘14 and Olivia Rozmus ‘16 as “key performers” in this semifinal game.
The girls went on to play Breese Central from Breese, Illinois for third place. The team lost, but returned home with the fourth place title in the Illinois 3A division. “It was very frustrating to lose our two matches at state, but overall it was a great season. Our goal was to make the final four and that’s what we did. I’m glad I could end my senior year season at the state tournament!” said Lena Mickelson ‘14.
