All good things must, unfortunately, come to an end. On October 23, the Payton boys soccer team played its last game of the season. With eleven seniors on the team, the end felt especially difficult and a bit premature. The team had hoped to advance further in post-season play, but there were many more positives than negatives.
After a tumultuous start to season, the team went on an eight game undefeated streak and captured its first conference title since 2009. Its impressive play resulted in three players receiving All-conference team honors (Aaron Kamel ‘15, Arman Khaghani ‘15 and Will Silberg ‘15). In addition Jose Padilla ‘15 received an All-Sectional team selection for all-around impressive play throughout the season. Payton didn’t just perform well in conference, it went undefeated in its rivalry games, beating Latin 2-1, Lincoln Park 2-0 and Northside 2-0 which meant retaking “the hydrant,” a trophy for the winner of the game. Not only did Payton perform well on the field, the team also excelled in the classroom with Aaron Kamel, Ross Sinar ‘15 and Jean-Stephan Naas ‘15 being named to the All-City academic team.
Although the team will lose eleven seniors, it won’t have too much trouble bouncing back next year with a plethora of talent found in the pool of current underclassmen and Juniors, according to Coach Escobar. “Ending the season is never easy, but the boys soccer program looks to bounce back next year to try to win another conference championship.”
Look for returning varsity players Cole Robbins ‘17, Bartolomeo Rondelli ‘17, Dylan Moore ‘16 and Donald Riddle ‘16 to be important contributors on next year’s team.
