Payton’s football team fell to Lincoln Park 14-0 in a rain-soaked contest Saturday night at Lane Stadium. It was their first loss, coming on the heels of a season-opening 49-0 victory over Whitney Young.
The Grizzlies got a strong turnout from their fans, but the stands almost completely emptied during the 2nd quarter when the skies opened up and torrential rain poured down. Hundreds scrambled for shelter in the stadium’s tunnels.
“It was my first Payton football game and it was really fun to cheer on the team,” said one Payton fan in attendance. “The rain was a little disappointing, though.”
By the time the storm rolled in, Payton was already down 14-0, and they never recovered.
In the second half, Grizzles quarterback Erik Haneberg ’18 twice led his team to within five yards of the goal line, but each time they turned it over on downs, stymied at the brink by Lincoln Park’s impenetrable defense.
“Our first drive we moved the ball well,” Grizzlies coach George Klupchak told the Sun Times after the game. “We saw some things where we thought we’d be able to run the ball, but we didn’t have as much success as we were looking for.”
Payton’s next matchup is Friday, September 8, against Kenwood. It begins at 7:15 p.m. at Lane Stadium.
