With champagne, lavish outfits, and the most revered actors and directors from around the world gathered in one place.the Golden Globes is one of the most viewed award shows in the US. Every year, a comedian is chosen to deliver a monologue to forge a sense of community between the actors, directors, and watchers at home. This year, Jo Koy, a 52-year-old comedian from Washington, was selected to perform, and while many viewers did not have expectations of him because he is a lesser-known comedian, by the end of the night, people’s expectations were even lower.
He began his speech by talking about his mother and how he experienced the Golden Globes as a child; sitting around a TV and guessing who would win as a family, and then segued into talking about the two huge blockbuster movies that came out last summer: Oppenheimer and Barbie, more commonly known as Barbenheimer. He made several jokes objectifying the Barbie cast and received many uncomfortable laughs from the audience when he began talking about being attracted to a plastic doll.
He continued to make jokes about the actors’ physiques, causing more uncomfortable laughs and awkward silences.
The most egregious error he made was when he told his audience to shut up and blamed his writers for his terrible performance. With the SAG AFTRA strike ending so recently, these comments were in poor taste. All in all, it is understandable that making a group of eclectic and (at times) self-righteous people laugh can be difficult, but if this debacle has taught the public anything, it is that ridiculing your audience will not make them laugh.
